Vampire Diaries Season 4 Premiere: The Choice Episode, In Case You Missed It
Wait, does anyone think we DON’T know what’s up? Why the cheesy “cast of characters” opening? I guess if you’ve never seen TVD before and decided that the first episode of the fourth season was the place to start, you’re pretty much up to speed now.

Elena wakes up in her bedroom after careening off Wickery Bridge—the same place she nearly died with her parents—with Matt behind the wheel. Stefan was there and dove in after them, since he has some Wickery Bridge-related Danger Sense. Elena pointed to Matt, asking him to save her friend first. He did, she died, and is now waking up a vampire because Meredith Fell put vampire blood in her system. Do we all get that?
A quick aside about CHOICE, the first of many: Dr. Fell is just dosing everyone up with vampire blood, and it works out for the best almost never. People have a right to decide what happens to their body—even if you’re trying to help—because if they don’t get to make that choice, the consequences are dire. This is why we have laws that require doctors to receive their patient’s consent before any procedure (seriously, what crazy med school did Fell go to? I smell malpractice lawsuits) and why laws seeking to circumvent a patients’ right to choose what happens to their bodies—Virginia—are a bad idea. Because they die and become vampires.

Anyway, Elena wakes up in her bedroom with the two Salvatore brothers watching her sleep. So we’re all back to normal EXCEPT WAIT SHE’S A VAMPIRE. Damon and Stefan immediately break into their angel/devil dialogue. Stefan gets to be the angel, and reassures Elena that whether or not she completes the transition to vampire is going to be her choice. This enrages Damon, who does not think Elena should get to decide whether she lives or not because she might decide not to. Damon makes such a great foil to Stefan because he’s such a charismatic devil; he wants Elena to live, he means well, he doesn’t see his refusal to accept her decisions about what happens to her as a bad thing because he loves her. Pro-tip: if you love her, trust that she’s making the right decision fo herself even if it’s not what you want. That’s pretty much the moral of this episode (slash this series).
The brothers continue their argument over how to deal with Elena’s death. Damon is pissed that Stefan saved Matt first, allowing Elena to die. His feelings on the subject are pretty clear: “And now the world has one more quarterback. Bravo, Brother.”
Any time the word choice is said, take a shot!
Cut to Bonnie. And I’m just going to say, right off the bat, her new storyline makes zero sense. But anyway, she’s going to try and reach out to the dead witches and stop Elena’s transition. Jeremy has nothing to do this episode, so he’s “helping.”

Meantime, in the town, a new character has arrived. Except I guess he’s been living there the whole time it’s just that we’re only seeing him now. How big a town is Mystic Falls? Pastor Creepypants appears out of the woodwork to depose the town’s secret council, arresting the Mayor and Sheriff for concealing their vampire and vampire/werewolf children. He’s backed by a seemingly endless supply of people armed to the teeth with total belief that vampires are real. Where were these people the last eight billion times this town has been menaced by vampires? Remember that time that Klaus and Co. threw a giant party and everyone came? Where was the pastor and his paramilitary organization then? Anyway, there’s a coup, and they start rounding up the vampires. I assume there will be a reason they don’t just kill the vampires.

I gotta say, though—subtlety they’re not going for. He wears his collar the whole time, and is backed by a group of young, clean cut men carrying guns. It’s almost embarrassing to suggest he represents the extreme right-wing movement, because it’s so damn obvious. Trying to force out the moderate members of the council who have found middle ground with the supernatural forces in town? Right, got it. Moving on.
Damon goes to try and kill a mourning Rebecca for forcing Elena and Matt off the bridge. He serves as a distraction for the Pastor’s attacking forces, who get the jump on Rebecca and throw her in the back of the van where (more importantly) they have Caroline, The Greatest.

But she won’t be there for long. Klaus is hanging out in Tyler’s body until Bonnie can focus on the spell to get him back in his own, so he gets the call from Mama-Mayor about Caroline getting carted off by Pastor Creepy and immediately runs out on a rescue mission. Watching this actor playing another guy acting like his character and not doing a very good job at it was hilariousand I wish they’d made him do it for the rest of the season.
Klaus-Tyler tears into the van where Rebecca and The Greatest are being held. He flips it, gets Caroline out and winks at Rebecca, revealing that her brother isn’t dead before… leaving her there. He and The Greatest run out into the woods where she, ecstatic that her boyfriend is apparently not dead, stops to make out with him. Klaus shockingly does the decent thing and tells her he’s not Tyler before it goes anywhere.

There are a lot of storylines going. Stefan and Elena were also taken by the secret anti-vampire police. The pastor talks about how Elena used to want to be a writer, and read her short stories to his daughter when she came over to babysit. It’s a bittersweet reminder of how Elena had this whole other life before her parents died and she started hanging around supernatural creatures. Of course she’s too distracted by a raging migraine to pay attention. Or her vampire transition. Same symptoms, apparently.
I kind of want to skip Bonnie’s arbitrary magic rules story. She can’t bring Elena back from the other side because it’s dark magic for dramatic tension reasons. Her dead Gran appears to tell her to knock it off, and I’m mostly sad that this character isn’t going to get a very interesting storyline this season.

Meanwhile, the worst brain trust is mounting a rescue mission: Damon, Matt, Meredith Fell and Sheriff Forbes are trying to figure out where the vampires are being taken. Matt mentions Pastor Creepypants’ ranch on the outskirts of town. This episode is full of convenient plot points and reveals.
Back at the ranch, Elena is dying. Bonnie can’t stop her from turning, and Elena doesn’t have any blood to drink. She and Stefan are being held in adjacent cells, so she has a chance to say goodbye—and talk about choices! Elena tells Stefan that the reason she was on the bridge was because she was on her way to see him, and “I picked you. Because I love you. No matter what happens, it’s the best choice I ever made.” It was really sweet and touching, and even Rebecca is moved. This show is great at actually fairly healthy relationships, in between all the killing and stalking and evil alter-egos. Elena, Caroline and Bonnie are great, supportive friends who regularly prioritize one another over their various romantic entanglements. And Elena and Stefan are really sweet and support each other and we get scenes like this one.

Bonnie’s troubles keep coming, because Klaus-Tyler wants back in his body, and threatens to kill Tyler and jump into someone else’s body if she doesn’t cast the spell to bring him back. It’s the biggest bluff ever, but Bonnie goes for it—and causes her grandmother’s soul to become some sort of black ooze? It’s not clear what is going on.
Back to the ranch, where a nice team kill goes down. Rebecca lures on of the anonymous guards over, and she and Stefan kill him through the bars of their cells and throw his body down in Elena’s reach. She makes it.
Damon and Survivor-Guilt Matt show up at the ranch too late to be of use to try and ransom Matt’s life for Stefan and Elena. The pastor isn’t really going for it, and out rushes the paramilitary organization while Matt lays on the ground, stunned and bleeding. Damon stabs someone with a gun.

Shit just got real.
Damon at this point is just going to kill all the people, but Vampire Elena runs out to stop him. Stefan grabs Matt where he tells him to get his shit together.“What you think you were my first choice?” And begin the slew of “choice.” Was it a little overdone, to the point where it would be a great drinking game? Yes. But I liked that the point TVD is really driving home is that it’s Elena’s life, and it is absolutely her choice what happens to that life. The choices are kind of lose-lose: vampire, or dead? but she still gets to make them.
Rebecca confronts a re-Klaused Klaus about totally abandoning her back there with that paramilitary organization. Sorry dramatic crying blood squirting scene. I laughed. I mean yeah, disappointing heartbreak family torn asunder whatever but mostly sobbing/screaming while squeezing blood bags. It ends on, “You are not my family. You are not my sister. You. Are. Nothing.” And Klaus snapping her neck.
But as Elena watches a dawn break on the green screen, there’s a hopeful note for her and Stefan. He warns her that turning into a vampire is going to be the worst thing she’s ever lived through, and she responds with a cheery, “But I’ll get to live. As a sister, and a friend. I’ll get to be with you…I’m gonna get through this.”
In spite of disappointing B-plots the new season is off to a great start. We’re going to get to see the consequences of the characters’ choices (shot!) and how they live or un-live (?) with them. In spite of the constant shit pile Elena seems to be stuck in, she never seems to be disempowered.
The Vampire Diaries, episode 4.01 “Growing Pains”
Ok, so I just watched 'Growing pains' because I live in the UK.
I cannot explain how happy I am that Klaus is back in his own body because it weirded me out seeing him in Tyler’s. Delena happened, and still NEEDS to happen before I cry and yeah pretty much I’m crying because it was so perfect.
